The Journey to Becoming
a Daughter of Mary Mother of Mercy
"How
do I know if God is calling me to a life of consecrated service? The spirit
of Vincent de Paul attracts me, but am I meant to be a Daughter of Mary Mother of Mercy?"
Initial Discernment
If you are interested
in learning more about the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, you can click below to
send your name to the Vocation Office. You will receive an email or a phone
call from a sister who will respond to your questions. She can help you
learn more about our community and about other communities. She can walk
with you as you pray and think about the options available to you. Like
Jesus we could ask you to "come and see," inviting you to get to know some
Daughters and their ministries.
The Journey Continues
After this initial
mutual discernment process between you and the Community, you can request
to move to a six-month period of pre-postulancy which is spent living with
the sisters. Then you would make formal application to become a postulant.
During this year you would live and serve with the sisters as you deepen
your relationship with God and learn more about the life of a Daughter
of Mary Mother of Mercy. You then enter
the Novicate for an intensive religious formation program which lasts about
a year and a half. In the Novicate you become a member of the community
and through the study of our heritage and spirit, you take on what it means
to be a Daughter of Mary Mother of Mercy.
Sent on Mission
Then you would be "sent
on mission" to live your vocation as a member of a local community. You
either begin your full-time service of the poor or continue your preparation
for ministry in some area of health care, education, pastoral or social
ministry. After five to seven years as a community member you have the
privilege of pronouncing your vows for the first time. These are renewed
annually as you live out your life as a servant of the poor. The Daughters of
Mary Mother of Mercy, called by Christ and sharing his spirit, pray, work, and live
together in community in order to bear witness to Christ, and to strengthen
one another for their mission of service of the poor.
